Ansedonia is dominated in every sense by the ruins of the 273 BC Roman city of Cosa on the top of the hill. It is built on an earlier Etruscan settlement and a network of Etruscan canals built on right angles off a natural rock slit – known as the “Spacco della Regina” (Queen’s Gorge) – runs the length of the beach to the east. You can find out more about both the local Etruscan and Roman heritages in the Museo Nazionale di Cosa. The nearby beach, the Spiaggia Nera, is an amazing expanse of almost black sand between Tagliata Etrusca and Capalbio Scalo accessed via trekking trails.
