Lago di Corbara occupies just some of the 20,000-acre Parco Fluviale del Tevere a popular walking and bird-watching destination for the buzzards, sparrow hawks and kites that can be sighted here. It’s only a short trip through the park from Baschi to Montecchio, one of the best-preserved towns in the territory and beautifully located under the Monte Croce di Serra (999 m/3,277 feet). Hiking trails take you up both this and the slightly smaller Citernella (880 m/2,886 feet) and a nature trail leads into the Area Archeologica Vallone San Lorenzo (Archeological Area of San Lorenzo), where you can visit the pre-Roman necropolis of San Lorenzo and the seventh- century BC tombs of the Copio. Pro Loco di Montecchio (Montecchio Tourist Office, offers guided “ecological” walks though the town and surrounding countryside.
