If you’re interested in learning about Valpolicella wine and have time for only one stop in the zone, I highly recommend paying Barbara Cerutti and her one-time lawyer husband a visit at their winery in Fumane. In the early 1990s, Barbara decided to turn her passion for wine into a lucrative business and since then, hasn’t looked back. More than a decade later, her winery produces award-winning wines that garner praise from the best in the business and are exported to the United States, Ireland and Australia (Amarone being their most popular seller on the US market). The Corteforte estate, built in the early 15th century, changed hands several times before finally being purchased by the Ceruttis and only one of its original towers remains standing. Call ahead to schedule tours of the surrounding vineyards followed by tastings (can be arranged in English). Often, tastings are held outdoors on the family’s private terrace and feature a minimum of three wines accompanied by salumi (coldcuts made from pork) and cheese from the Lessini zone for approximately Euro 10. And if you’re anything like me, after a chat with Barbara you won’t want to leave the winery – and you don’t have to. The owners enjoy the company of visitors so much that they don’t want them to leave – so they’ve converted a tower and another country house on their property to comfortable guest rooms.Within the ancient romantic tower are four medieval-style rooms with en suite bathrooms and a rooftop sunbathing terrace (a popular choice with couples). Along with the cantina and tastings room in the main building are two mini-apartments that offer a lot of privacy and are ideal for families. For the ultimate privacy, however, request the casette, a small house in the midst of Corteforte’s vineyards. The Cerutti family values warm hospitality and treats each guest with the same kindness and warmth as their own family members.
