Few places are as exclusive and tranquil as this stone inn, set on beautiful sprawling landscape with a small 13th-century Romanesque church dedicated to Santa Maria. At the turn of the century, Matteo Marighi and his mother keyed in on a need for a sophisticated retreat and converted a private residence into an elegant bed and breakfast. The six luxurious rooms (one suite, two junior suites and three doubles) overlook the gardens and are decked out in fine linens and fresh cut flowers. La Suite and La Camera dell’Amarone both feature a hydro massage bath, and all rooms have television, air conditioning, telephones and either a shower, bath or Jacuzzi. Families are welcome here, particularly in the Greta, a junior suite with enough room for children. One of my favorite rooms, La Camera del Mosaico, enjoys a lot of bright sunlight but what gives it its name is what makes it so unique – the mosaic tile bathtub. If you’re after romance, La Suite has a large bathroom, fireplace and canopy bed to put you in an indulgent mood. Weather ermitting, breakfast is served in the garden where guests are also invited to relax on lounge chairs and in the hot tub. This is the perfect base for exploring Valpolicella’s wineries (inquire about renting a Smart Car), and, only kilometers from Verona and Garda, it is also a wonderful choice for those who don’t want to worry about overpriced, charmless hotel rooms. Don’t leave without sampling their homemade confections.
