The exterior of the Oslo City Hall, at Fridtjof Nansens Plass, does not look inviting, but the interior, and the view of the harbor from one of the rooms, makes it well worth a visit. The city hall is the seat of the city council and was inaugurated in 1950. It’s most famous as the building where the Nobel Peace Prize is handed out on December 10 every year. This is the only Nobel Prize presented outside Nobel’s native country of Sweden. When the Nobel Foundation was founded, Norway and Sweden still formed a union. Guided tours of the Oslo City Hall are offered all year three times a day (10 am, 12 noon and 2 pm), which you should take advantage of. The tours are included in the admission, which is 40 kr/$6 in the summer (May-September) and free in the winter.
