The place to start the hike (which is a 10-minute breeze) is the Iglesia de Santa María del Coro on Calle de Agosto at the northern edge of the old quarter, though you can just easily begin from the Paseo Nuevo (known locally as the rompeolas, or wave breaker, for obvious reasons) that wraps around the hill from the mouth of the Río Urumea to the bay. At the top, educational placards describe various aspects of the Castillo de la Mota, including the battlement walls and rusty canons that once guarded the town and bay from stealthy French and English invaders.
