The 29.2-mile Gen. James A. Van Fleet State Trail, is an excellent choice for hikers who don’t mind sharing the path with bikers. There is a parallel trail that’s for horsemen and women. The hiking tail is paved exceptb for the southernmost 2.8 miles and a 5.2-mile stretch in the northern third. There are restrooms, benches, covered shelters and two picnic areas along the way.
From Lakeland, take I-4 east five miles to Hwy 33, exit north and continue 38 miles to Hwy 50. Turn left and travel six miles to tiny Mabel and the entrance. You can get additional information by writing to the trail’s office at 12549 State Park Drive, Clermont, FL 34711.
