Now, if you’re ready to get rid of those sea legs, give the Central Florida Zoological Park a look, or About the time the riverboats were disappearing from the St. Johns, the circus arrived in Sanford. When it pulled up stakes and packed the tents, a roustabout left one rhesus
monkey and one goat behind. Someone took them in and put on a show. The monkey rode the goat. Period. But it was enough to start the Sanford Zoo.
The park was born in 1971 when the city decided to get rid of the zoo.Agroup of people rallied behind the animals and formed a park
that has become home to hundreds of species from around the world: Florida’s threatened black bears, American crocodiles, bald eagles, caracals, black howler monkeys (you better believe they howl), kinkajoos, clouded leopards, barking tree frogs (yep, theybark), banded Egyptian cobras, East African green mambas, jaguarundis, and a rare, two-headed, red-belly turtle. There are also hands-on-the-animals exhibits.
But the star is Geraldine, a ham of a hippopotamus who loves to mug for the camera. (You’ll get a lesson on hippopotamus husbandry in The Nature Coast chapter). The Central Florida Zoological Park is 20 miles north of Orlando off I-4. Exit right (east) at Hwy 46, go to US 17/92, turn left (north), and look for the signs. It’s guaranteed to give you a lesson not only in wildlife but in the fragile nature of the world through activities such as its animal encounters and flashlight safaris.
