Many moons ago it was a combination fishing pier and social gathering hot spot for townies and tourists. While trolleys once took passengers out, the main modes of transportation now are the auto (this pier has two lanes of asphalt with pull-offs) and the Nike (the two-thirds mile run has open sidewalks). The Pier has returned after the hiatus as a gathering spot for the same kind of people who were drawn here in the first half of this century. The five-story building is pretty hard to miss, given the city’s low skyline and the fact that it looks like an upside-down pyramid. The 21st century version has an assortment of shops, restaurants and an aquarium.
