lolani Palace is an historic Hawaiian royal palace, originally built in 1882 by King Kalakaua, and restored in 1978 at a cost of $6 million. Exhibiting an ornate Italian Renaissance style of architectural style, this is the only royal palace located in the U.S. It is also the site of the overthrow and imprisonment of the last Hawaiian monarch, Queen Liliuokalani, in 1893. Tours of the palace include the Grand Hall, with its sweeping koa staircase and cedar walls, adorned with portraits of Hawaiian and European royal personages; the Royal Dining Room, with its European-design period furnishings; the King’s Library, with antique 19th-century desk and chairs, old books and photographs, and one of the island’s first telephones; the royal bedrooms of King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani; and the Throne Room, with the original thrones of the king and queen.
