Scharf's Motor Inn & Restaurant is located in Deer Lodge, a small city with many ties to the early day history of Montana. The Territorial Prison and later State Prison is within walking distance of Scharfs and is open for guided tours. The buildings no longer act as a prison but houses the Old Montana State Prison Museum. Adjacent to the Prison is a group of museums. The Auto Museum featuring the auto through the years, Doll Museum with yesterday's play things, Frontier Museum with guns, bottles, and a bar, Art Gallery with local artist as well as the works of Gary Carter, renowned western artist. Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site is located at the city limits of Deer Lodge. The ranch, once the spread of early day cattleman John Grant, has been restored and operates as a working cattle ranch. Besides a touring attraction, the ranch features programs dealing with ranch life in the early day West. Deer Lodge is in itself a study in history with homes of various architectural design, many of which are included in the National Register. Those wishing more active pursuits will find hunting, fishing, golfing, swimming and rafting available in season.
