A Brief History of Bregenz
Historically, Bregenz was first a Celtic and then a Roman settlement site, and originally hit the map as “Brigantium.” Regional wars wiped out the town by the mid fifth century, and it was not to be significantly settled again until the 10th century, when a castle that still remains was raised near the site of the old walled town. Today, however, Bregenz makes less of its history than it does of its contemporary architecture and modern art exhibits. It serves as the capital of the Vorarlberg region, and is the most culturally active city in the province.
Bregenz Orientation
Bregenz lies amid hilly terrain on the easternmost shore of the Bodensee or, in English, Lake Constance. It’s the third-largest lake in central Europe, spanning 540 square km, plunging to a depth of 252 m, and with a shoreline circumference of 273 km. To the south and west of Bregenz stretch the Bregenzerwald forest and the Vorarlberg Alps. The city lies 120 km east of Zürich, 190 km southwest of Munich, and 200 km west of Innsbruck. Its position at the junction of Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Germany makes it an easily accessible day-tripping base for those wishing to explore the lake region.
