St. Christoph
Some 17 buildings comprise the hamlet of St. Christoph, a secluded, exclusive satellite resort of St. Anton that boasts a history all its own. The settlement lies at the top of the barren Arlberg Pass, a six-km climb above St. Anton along a dramatic tunnel road that’s avalanche-protected with an opening on one side, and is home to a ski school, six expensive hotels, and a national ski team training center. If you’re not staying here – and given local room rates, the odds are good you’re not – St. Christoph provides little more than a lunch stop on a day-tripping ski route; but, if you head for the Hospiz Alm, St. Christoph is a stop well worth making.
The Hospiz Alm restaurant is owned and operated by the same family that runs the swanky Arlberg Hospiz Hotel down the road. The atmosphere in this old farmhouse, however, is much more fun. Rough-hewn wood, lots of stone, and a roaring fire create a cozy ambiance – and don’t miss the stairway slide down to the bathrooms. (One of the region’s best wine cellars lurks downstairs as well.) Excellent traditional cuisine makes this a favorite on-slope lunch stop for skiers, and the gourmet creations of Stefan Hofer make this the place in the Arlberg for a romantically rustic dinner.
