Halstatt

Halstatt, Austria (cc)

Halstatt

The lovely little village of Halstatt may very well prove the highlight of any Austrian tour. Its old wooden houses stack up, wedged between the forested mountain and the lake Halstättersee. Cars park in garages outside of town, and trains stop at a station across the lake – passengers, ferried into the village by boat. Most extraordinary here is a visit to the Pfarrkirche and its crowded cemetery – a cemetery so crowded, in fact, that burial there is only temporary. After 10 or so years of decomposition time, the bones are cleared out and – after the town gravedigger decoratively paints the skull – filed away in the Beinhaus. Halstatt also has an interesting history museum that lays out the village’s Celtic ties.
