Biot Travel Guide

Introduction

Biot is another supremely ancient and impossibly pretty medieval village, nestled in the hills above Antibes-Juan les Pins, just back from the French Riviera coast, with lovely little wooded paths meandering along its periphery. Founded in 165 BC and once the property of the Knights Templar and the Chevaliers of Malta, its vielle ville, or old town, is a thoroughly atmospheric warren of narrow, winding lanes, connected by tunnels and flights of steps, with Rue du Templiers particularly charming with its provincial restaurants and cafés and quaint shops. The town also has a long tradition of glass-blowing and decorative ceramics production that dates from ancient times and continues into present day. There are several glassworks or verreries in town that attest to Biot's association with the glass industry, notable among them La Verriere de Biot which was established here in the 1950s in a large complex at the base of the town and which has a glass gallery where you can see glass being blown, take lessons in the art of glass-blowing, and even shop for glassware and bubble-glass products.
