Île Saint-Honorat is a Cistercian monastery that has been continuously occupied since 410 AD. Although most of the structures in use today are modern, the island is scattered with ancient chapels and fortifications. The monks of today cultivate rosemary and lavender and operate a small, highly regarded vineyard. But, in its heyday, the Lérins Monastery was one of the most important economic and political powers in Provence, owning not only Cannes but also nearby Mougins and Vallauris. In the sixth century, it was apparently the most famous monastery in all of Christendom, holding out against regular Saracen and Spanish attacks. In addition to the numerous chapels on the island, two cannonball furnaces, one on each end, are listed historic monuments. The island is private and owned by the monks, but regular visits, with guided tours, are operated throughout the year. A number of companies provide regular excursions throughout the day for a standardized, round-trip fare of Euro 10, half-price for children between five and 10 years old. Boats leave, throughout the day, for the 15-minute ride to Île Sainte-Marguerite from the Gare Maritime, Quai des Iles at the end of Quai Labeuf on the Vieux Port.
