This massive 14th-century fortress had been a ruined glass factory when, in 1918, it was somewhat imaginatively restored and rebuilt by an American sculptor, Henry Clews, with the help of his wealthy architect wife. Two towers, Saracen and Romanesque, were added to the complex, as was a turreted gatehouse and various ramparts and terraces. The castle reflects the Clews’ eclectic tastes rather than a truly historical restoration. Many of its turrets and walls are decorated with the artists’ grotesquely imagined creatures. Today, the castle operates as an arts foundation, offering residencies to talented young artists working in dance, design, film, literature, music, theater, visual and performance arts. The grounds and gardens, Clews studio and art collection are open to the public with guided tours throughout the year and there is a small tea room. Perhaps the most fun is the opportunity to swim at the foot of a castle – there is a small, beach between the château and La Napoule Port.
