In 1946, the curator of the Château Grimaldi, the 12th-century fortified house that the city had turned into a museum of history, offered Picasso some studio space in which to work. The post-war period was a time of hardship for everyone, including Europe’s most celebrated living artist of the day. Out of gratitude, he gave the museum a large number of his works – 28 paintings, 54 drawings, ceramics, prints and tapestries. Eventually, the Picasso Museum became the first one devoted to his work. The museum has grown substantially, with works by many of Picasso’s contemporaries. It is said that if you want to see Picasso’s Antibes paintings, you have to go to Antibes to see them. The Château Grimaldi is between the covered market at the Place Masséna and the ramparts.
