Painter Jean-Gabriel Domergue wanted to build a house like the ones he had seen in Fiesole, near Florence. During the 1930s, he built and decorated the house, designing every detail. His wife, a sculptor, was responsible for the gardens, with their terraces and water features. Domergue, who designed the poster for the one-day 1939 film festival, was a popular portrait painter and the villa formed the backdrop for paintings of Brigitte Bardot and Gina Lollobrigida, among others. Domergue and his wife are buried in the gardens.
