Kronberg

Kronberg

Kronberg can be reached in less than 30 minutes from Frankfurt on S-Bahn S4.

Sightseeing in Kronberg

Burg Kronberg (Castle), Schlossstraße 10, towers over the old town. The keep is early 13th century, with the rest of the castle added in the following two centuries. A small museum documents the town’s history.

The rest of the old town is pretty, well-maintained, and romantic, especially at night. It is highly recommended and popular with diners from Frankfurt making reservations for dinner, especially over weekends. In the late 19th century, Kronberg became a favorite place for painters from Frankfurt trying their hand at the new French Impressionist style. Ever since, Kronberg has been favored by artists, with the number of small art galleries in the old town out of proportion to the number of actual residents.

Queen Victoria of Prussia (1840-1901), the eldest daughter of the more famous Queen Victoria of Great Britain, built Schloss Victoria in 1889-94 after the death of her husband Kaiser Friedrich III. He was emperor for only 99 days. She was a liberal figure with views directly opposite those of her son, Kaiser Wilhelm II, whom she had little contact with during her final years. The castle is now a luxury hotel with an upscale restaurant. It is worth driving by and the park is freely open.
