Höxter
The old town of Höxter has many half-timber buildings from the 16th century with excellent samples in Markstraße and Westerbachstraße. The Weser Renaissance Rathaus (Town Hall) was built in 1610-13. The 12th-century Romanesque Kilianikirche has two visibly unequal towers and an interesting Renaissance pulpit. The town claims to be the original setting for Hansel and Gretel.
The Reichsabtei Corvey (Imperial Abbey) is a few km north of Höxter. It was founded in 822 by Louis the Pious and remained a monastery until secularization in 1803. The only part remaining of the original Carolingian building is the Westwerk. An ancient copy of Tacitus’ history annals was discovered here in the 16th century. Heinrich Hoffman von Fallerleben, who worked here as a librarian, wrote Das Deutschlandlied, which, set to music by Haydn, became Germany’s national anthem. The original first verse, which has Germany’s boundaries at prewar levels, is now banned in Germany. The Höxter-Corvey Museum explains the role of the area in early German politics.
