A Brief History of Hildesheim

A Brief History of Hildesheim

In AD 815, King Louis the Pious established a bishopric in Hildesheim. The town rapidly developed from a small trading village into one of the most important religious centers in the German-speaking world. Its true golden age was from 993 to 1038 when Bishops Bernward and Godehard started the construction of the Romanesque churches. Somehow, the town failed to maintain its importance in subsequent centuries. In 1945, most of the historic town center was destroyed by air raids. Much of the town was rebuilt in modern style, but the magnificent Marktplatz was restored in the 1980s.
