Astorga Travel Guide
Introduction
Astorga is a lovely little city with a medieval core and a sweet tooth, situated near León at the foot of Montes de León. The city is actually wrapped in the ruins of a Roman wall, and has a legacy tied to pilgrims, chocolate and pastries. It has a chocolate museum where you can sample chocolate made from 200-year-old recipes, and pastry shops where you can feast on Astorga's unique pastries, including those from a century-old, award-winning confectionary. There are also one-off boutiques and quaint shops in the city center that are a joy to discover, and a rich trove of architectural gems that includes a fabulous Romanesque cathedral begun in the 15th century and now a National Monument, an early whimsical manifestation of Spain's most beloved architect Antoni Gaudi, and myriad Roman remains worth poking around. Oh, and if you're here around the end of July, Astorga will regale you with fireworks displays and bullfights at its annual Festividad de Santa Marta.
Location
Astorga is situated at the foot of Montes de León in the province of León in northern Spain, some 27 miles (43 km) southwest of the city of León. It lies along the ancient pilgrimage route, Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James.
