Old Town/Chinatown and North Mississippi Avenue
Old Town/Chinatown
This is one of Portland’s oldest downtown districts, situated near the waterfront, in the northwest part of town. During the late 1800s it gained notoriety as the hub of “shanghai” activity, where unsuspecting men were drugged and kidnapped, then sold to ship captains as deck-hands.
Fast forward: Old Town/Chinatown is now an interesting little corner of the city, and the site of the increasingly popular Portland Saturday Market, where in an open-air bazaar setting you can pick your way through the offerings of hundreds of arts and crafts vendors.
Also in the neighborhood is the Classical Chinese Garden, with its narrow paths snaking through authentic Chinese garden settings, and around Oriental buildings and a small lake. There is a tea house on the premises, overlooking the garden, as well as a gift shop where you can buy mah-jong sets and other Chinese knick-knacks.
North Mississippi Avenue
Several blocks north of the Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood and the Willamette River, Mississippi Avenue dashes off directly north from Fremont Street and Interstate 5. This is where you’ll discover a small, five-block pocket, newly revitalized and bubbling over with an interesting mix of cafés and other eateries, both funky and hip, as well as brewpubs and unique shops and boutiques. There are also a couple of live music venues well worth checking out here, prominent among them the Mississippi Pizza & Pub, offering jazz and bluegrass, along with local brews.
We might also add that North Mississippi is a neighborhood that is best explored on foot, block by block, nook by nook.
