City CenterSalt Lake Temple in Temple Square on West North Temple Street is at the heart of Salt Lake City. This is the nucleus of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons). This is the point from where all distances in the city are measured. And that’s important, because all street addresses in Salt Lake are based on distances - distances from this temple. The temple itself is a magnificent piece of architecture, with six granite spires rising triumphantly into the sky, and several smaller ones in a chorus directly beneath. Also on the square are the domed Tabernacle, home of the world-renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir; the Assembly Hall where you can attend free concerts; and two visitors centers that offer film screenings.Of the other attractions in the city center, the key ones include the Museum of Church History and Art, where exhibits are centered around the Latter-day Saint experience; Museum of Utah Art and History, where changing exhibits highlight the cultural and artistic heritage of Utah; the historic Joseph Smith Memorial Building and the Brigham Young Monument; the LDS Church Office Building and Brigham Young Historic Park; the Delta Center which houses the NBA’s Utah Jazz; and The Gateway, which incorporates a 90-shop plaza, a planetarium with an IMAX theater, the turn-of-the-century Union Pacific Depot, and the 10,000-square-foot Living Planet Aquarium.Around the CityAlso, around the city are yet more museums, parks, churches, monuments and attractions, chief among them a pair of architecturally interesting cathedrals on South Temple Street; the turn-of-the-century Wall Mansion; Utah Museum of Natural History which houses a Dinosaur Discovery Hall; the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, a 74,000-square-foot repository for art on the Utah University campus, showcasing a permanent collection of over 17,000 objects of art; and Liberty Park, where you can visit both an aviary housing 400-plus birds as well as the Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts.
