Heritage Square and Cooper Square
In the city, the place to visit is Heritage Square, where a rich collection of early-day, Victorian-era downtown homes, restored and converted, now house shops, boutiques and restaurants. Here you can visit what was once the city’s most prominent home, the Rosson House, and also the Phoenix Museum of History and the Arizona Science Center.
Another pocket of interest in downtown is Copper Square, the city’s cultural center, filled with venues for theater and the performing arts, including opera, ballet, symphony and other musical offerings, dance, drama, films, and even live concerts. Notable here are the Herberger Theater Center, where local troupes perform, the relatively contemporary Dodge Theatre, and the ornate Orpheum Theatre.
Museums and Plazas
In the city, too, are the Heard Museum, home to a superb collection of art and artifacts from the area’s Native American cultures, the prestigious Phoenix Art Museum, and the Pueblo Grande Museum, devoted to the preservation and display of the prehistoric and ancient heritage of the Hohokam Indians.
Phoenix also has outdoor, tree-lined retail plazas for shoppers, and good restaurants all around, representing virtually every known cuisine. The strongest culinary influences here are of course Mexican and Western, and the pick of the bunch is Southwestern, with a range that goes from mild to very hot and spicy.
For sports fans, Phoenix offers the following: in winter, the NBA’s Phoenix Suns go into action at the downtown Airways Center; in spring, nine major leagues baseball clubs show up in Phoenix to train, including the Oakland As, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres, among others; and in summer, the Arizona Diamondbacks play at the Chase Field.
