Indian Communities
Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
The Salt River Pima- Maricopa Indian Community is a 53.000-acre reservation, situated some 15 miles east of Phoenix, close to Mesa and Tempe. Points of interest here include the adobe- and saguaro cactus rib-construction Hoo-hoogum Ki Museum, where you can see pottery, baskets and other artifacts centered around the history and culture of the Pima and Maricopa people; the 140-acre Pavilions Shopping Center; and the Casino Arizona, which offers restaurant and entertainment choices, as well as a cultural arts exhibit. Also on the community lands is the Talking Stick Golf Club, site of PGA tournaments, with two 18-hole championship courses.
Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation
Located just east of Scottsdale, roughly 23 miles northeast of Phoenix, the Fort McDowell Indian Nation also sports a full-fledged casino with gaming, entertainment and dining, as well as a golf club, a Radisson Hotel Resort, and an RV resort. Additionally, the community-owned Fort McDowell Adventures offers trail rides, cattle drives, hay rides, jeep tours, and real-time cookouts.
Gila River Indian Community
The Gila Rive Indian Community, located to the south of Phoenix, a little way from Maricopa, is the largest Indian reservation in the area, encompassing 373,365 acres. Here you can visit the Gila Indian Center, which includes a museum devoted to Pima and Maricopa history, an arts and crafts center, and a Heritage Park where you can tour traditional Pima, Maricopa, Apache and Tohono O’odham Indian villages. Among others, the reservation features a drag and boat-racing facility, the Firebird International Raceway; and the 500-room Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa, which has a 17,000-square-foot spa on its premises; and three 18-hole golf courses. Also, the reservation is now home to the classic Old West theme town and park, Rawhide, where you can relive the Wild West days.
Ak-Chin Indian Community
The Ak-Chin Indian Community is situated south of the Gila River Indian Community and Maricopa, approximately 30 miles south of Phoenix. It takes in 21,840 acres of reservation land, upon which are located the Him-Dak Eco Museum and Archive, with exhibits centered around Ak- Chin heritage and culture, including in its collection several prehistoric artifacts; and the Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino and Resort, which offers complete gaming facilities, as well as 140 guest rooms and four restaurants.
